DUE OCTOBER 15: ASSIGNMENT NUMBER ONE

Jane Austen

The reason why I chose Jane Austen was because I was already familiar with her, and wanted to learn more about her. In researching about her, I found out that she had published six books; while I was only familiar with one of hers: “Pride and Prejudice".

What I also found that interested me about her was, that she actually went to school to learn to be literate. Jane Austen, I think would make a great person to choose for "Power of One". She influenced all the areas: Government, Economics, Science/Technology, and Culture. She influenced the government by speaking out through her books, economics by people wanting to buy her books, science/technology by printing her books, and of course she influenced the culture of the due time by her books; the way they were written, the way she spoke out to people, and the way it reached people.

Bill Clinton

The reason why I chose Bill Clinton, was because I really never knew anything about him at all, and wanted to learn more about him...since he was one of our past Presidents. Something interesting that I found out while reading about him, was that he had very troubled child years that included abuse from his Step-father. I think that Bill Clinton would be a good choice for a Power of One project, because he certainly influenced all required elements of the project. Obviously with Government and Economics he influenced by being the President. Science and Technology he influenced by pushing for better medical services and he influenced/effected Culture by setting laws for a better environment...

C.S Lewis

I decided to choose C.S Lewis for the person of my choice because I have always been interested in him and his great works. Something new that I learned about him that I never knew before, and I found very interesting was that he fought in World War 1. I found this very interesting...I think C.S Lewis would make a good candidate for the Power of One project because he effected all required areas. Government he effected by speaking out through all sorts of Christianity books he wrote, as well as the Economics area. He affected Science/Technology because of the printing methods trying to meet the demand of his faithful readers, and he affected Culture through his books, luring more and more people on the path of Christianity.

COMPLETED ON OCTOBER 11, 2009

ASSIGNMENT #2 DUE ON NOVEMBER 4, 2009:

1.)Walter Elias Disney (also known as Walt Disney) was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 5, 1901. After Walt was born the family decided to move to Marceline Missouri; this is where he grew up. As Walt grew older, he realized he had a great talent in art. He would often sell his work to his neighbors to gain some extra money. When he was of age, he moved back to Chicago to work on his art and photography abilities at McKinley High School.  However, in the fall of 1918, Walt had a change of mind. He decided to try and enlist for the military service, but was rejected because he was underage. This event sent him to search for a new career. Walt decided to join the Red Cross association which sent him overseas to France, where he drove ambulances, and transported Red Cross officials. A year later, when Walt returned home, he decided to follow his dreams and study commercial art. Soon after his studies, he was able to create a small company called Laugh-O-Grams which shortly became bankrupt. After this event occurred, he decided to go to Hollywood to get a fresh start. After an almost immediate success on his "Alice Comedies", Walt was recognized as part of the Hollywood foundation. In 1932, the first ever colored cartoon named Flowers and Trees sky-rocketed the fame and success of Walt Disney. Not too soon after this release did he release yet another colored cartoon called The Old Mill. However, this one was the very first to use the multi-plane camera technique. On December 21, 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was premiered at the Carthay Theater in Los Angeles.  This film produced an unbelievable cost of $1, 499, 000 during the Depression. This film was the first full-length animated musical, flowed by Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi, in only of a five year span.In 1955, Walt's dream of an amusement park became true when the Disneyland Park opened to the public. A quote by him states: "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world." Walt passed away on December 15, 1966 from a drastic case of lung cancer. Throughout his life, Walt Disney was an achiever, role model, and a step towards a better future.

2.) I chose Walt Disney for my Power of One project because; I have always enjoyed watching his great works of Disney classics, such as Pinocchio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs ect… I also chose to do Walt Disney because I think I will have endless amounts of fun researching him, and doing the Power of One project on him, rather than by doing somebody else.

3.)  Life back in the 1900’s was obviously very different from our life style and traditions today. Back then, they had a strict dress code. The women and girls were to wear skirts that came down all the way to the ground. If it was anything higher, they were considered “unladylike” and an embarrassment. They also had to wear high buttoned shoes, and whale boned corsets. The men and boys also had a set dress code. They had to wear dark and heavy suits. In the summer they would often wear a white flannel shirt but their clothes were never fit for the hot weather. As far as entertainment goes, most of it was consumed of either books, or the radio. Sports were just getting introduced to the society back in the very early 1900’s. Such sports included football, basketball, tennis, golf, horse racing, and polo. However, baseball was one of the most fancied sport of that day in time, and America’s most popular. As far as employment and jobs go, if you were a male, you typically carried on the family name by running a business that had been passed on for generations at a time. Women were also allowed to work, but their working choices were limited. In most cases, the men were the ones who worked and earned money for the family, while the wife stayed home doing house holding chores. Now, for the children, if you were a girl you would stay home with the mom (if she doesn’t work) and be trained how to become a mother and a good wife. If you were a boy, you would often go with the father to start to learn how to take on the family business. The children however, didn’t start helping, and learning from the parents until after they came home from school.

4.) Walt Disney impacted the world greatly. Not only did he impact it when he was living, but he is still impacting it although he is no longer with us on Earth today. He affected the economy by all of the films and movies he produced, by people paying to go see them in theaters. When his first film came out, it produced $1,499,000 in the depths of Depression which helped the economy greatly. Another way he impacted the economy of his time was, the creation and opening of his Disneyland Parks; which had people pay for admit ion and such ect... He affected culture mostly by his shows and the impact they had on people around the world; particularly children and they way they were influenced by the films. Walt affected technology greatly by being the very first to use the multi-plane camera technique (which he invented). This was used to create animated pictures, and helped us progress with film making through our time. Last but not least, another area that Walt covered in affecting was government. He affected government by trying to let them allow him to open his amusement parks; because apparently there was a whole ordeal about the government having problems with him opening up his Disneyland Park.

Assignment 1:

--"Government, Economics, Science/Technology, and Culture" -- should not be capitalized.
--"the culture of the due time" -- what exactly did you mean by "due time?"
--"Presidents" -- If you say "President Clinton," or "Mr. President" -- it is capitalized because it takes the form of a proper noun...when used as a common noun (like you used it) it is lower case.
--"World War 1" -- Roman numerals are used for WWI and WWII.
--"C.S Lewis" -- should be C.S. Lewis
--The appeal and effect of Lewis' writing extends far beyond Christian readers.
