Power of one

I selected Abraham Lincoln because he fought for the freedom of slaves, and first time I saw his introduction says he was the most beloved American President in United States. He freed the slaves and his face is on the penny and five dollar bill.

The reason I selected Abraham Lincoln was that he was the 16th President of the United State of America. He was born on February 12, 1809 at Sinking Spring Farm, in southeast Hardin Country, Kentucky. His birthday is the same day as Charles Darwin. He named was after his grandfather who was killed by Indians. He died on April 15, 1865. He had many jobs such as clerk of the dealer, postmaster, surveyor, and other job. Abraham joined the federal army and enlisted as a volunteer in the war against Indians. He saved as a Whig member in the Illinois General Assembly for eight years and in the U.S. House of Representatives for one term (1847-1849) before he was election as the nation’s first Republican President in 1860. In 1842, he married with Mary. Lincoln became President in 1861. He opposed the extension of slavery; his presidency divided the United States that led to the Civil War, which cost economic chaos. During the Civil War, he had the most power over other former President in the United States history the North had majority of the factories that produce weapons, wagons, and other items for we need the war. As President, he remembered for the Civil War and freeing Confederate slaves with the 1863, Emancipation Proclamation; for delivering the Gettysburg Address, the most famous oration in American history, on November 19, 1863. In addition, most of all he is remembered for his tragic assassination by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C.

Jane Addams

The important woman I chose to claim for her fame was Jane Addams. Jane Addams was born in the small town of Cedarville, Illinois, on September 6, 1860. The reason why I chose Jane Addams was that I thought it was interesting that she keep trying to help people.

Jane was a person of possibilities as a Power of One subject for research because she helped the poor. She studied at the University of Rockford and graduated with honors in 1881. In August of that same year, she was in surgery for spinal cord, which interrupted her studies at the Philadelphia Women's Medical University.

In 1883, Jane and her stepmother went to Europe for two years. They returned home to Baltimore in 1886. During her trip in Europe, she saw in London poverty that became a foundation to the first settlement in the United States in collaboration with Ellen Gates. In addition, she looked for the poorest regions in the United States. Jane selected Chicago to build the first settlement house that was Hull House. She educated people and gave speeches that made known throughout the nation. Hull House served as a support facility for the welfare of the poor and as center of community improvement projects in the region. In 1931, Jane received the Nobel Prize. She died on May 21, 1935.

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is the current Secretary of State for the United States. As Secretary of State, Clinton became the first former First Lady to serve in a president's cabinet. Before that, she was a State Senator for New York from 2001 to 2009. She served as First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001 as the wife of the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton. Clinton ran in the 2008 election and was a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. She was born October 26, 1947 in Illinois. In 1969, Hillary Rodham attracted national attention as being the first student to address the Wellesley College during commencement. She started her career in law after graduating from Yale Law School in 1973 followed by time as a Congressional legal counsel. In 1974, she moved to Arkansas and married Bill Clinton in 1975. Then in 1977, she cofounded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families and became the first female chair of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978. As First Lady of the United States in 1994 she pushed for the Clinton major health care plan initiative. It failed to gain approval from the U.S. Congress. In 1997 and 1999, Mrs. Clinton played a role in supporting the establishment of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, the Adoption and Safe Families Act, and the Foster Care Independence Act. As First Lady, she caused split response from the American public. Hillary Rodham Clinton is the only First Lady to have been served a subpoena and testified before a federal grand jury due to the Whitewater controversy in 1996. During her husband's administration, Mrs. Clinton was never found guilty of any wrongdoing in this or any other investigations.
