       Dwight D. Eisenhower

Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th president of the United States. He was born October 14, 1890 and died March 28, 1969. On January 20, 1953, Eisenhower came into office. He served two terms, which ended January 20, 1961.

Eisenhower’s military career began as a temporary lieutenant colonel in World War I. Later, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor he was asked to help plan for war with Japan and Germany, and he accepted. He was then appointed head of European Theatre of Operations and sent to England. Then, in 1942 President Roosevelt appointed Eisenhower as Allied commander of the invasion of northwest Africa. Eisenhower appointed Jean-Francoise Darlan ad political head of French North Africa. The success of Operation Torch promoted Eisenhower to full general and he organized the invasion of Sicily.

In 1943, Eisenhower was put in charge for the invasion of Italy. On September 23, Eisenhower and Piertro Badoglio signed the Italian surrender aboard a ship called Nelson. Eisenhower’s success as a military man got him promoted to head of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force and was responsible for the invasion of Europe called Operation Overlord, which was successful. Eisenhower served as US member of the Allied Commission governing Germany, briefly after the war. In 1945, Eisenhower took over as US Army Chief of Staff. Eisenhower retired from the army in 1948. Eisenhower returned to Europe as Supreme Commander of NATO in 1951. In 1952, Eisenhower was approached for being a Republican Party candidate and accepted, defeating the Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson.

Eisenhower’s first term as president revolved around the oil industry. Eisenhower had some suspicion about a bill that was passed with the senate and he vetoed it saying in his diary that there was some possible lobbying. In Eisenhower’s second term, he tried to segregate schools.

I chose Dwight Eisenhower because he is a president that I am not that familiar with. I also thought he was interesting because he segregated some schools and was the president who began that. What drew me to him was my unfamiliarity. With the information I found, I am even more interested because he had a very prestige military career before he was president. I am looking forward to learning more about him.

During the 1890s in America many things were going on. Africa-Americans were being lynched by white Southerners, and Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah became the 43rd, 44th, and 45th states. In Europe the Eiffel Tower is completed, the first Sino-Japanese war takes place, and Ghana is captured by Great Britain. During the 1950s, the Korean War begins, a Japanese peace treaty is signed in San Francisco by 49 nations, and Sputnik is launched. During the 1960s the first American goes into space, President Kennedy is assassinated, and Martin Luther King Jr. is killed. Many important things happened during Eisenhower’s lifetime.

Eisenhower influence economics by investing in the oil industry and car industry.  Eisenhower helped make a non-Communist government in South Vietnam. He made it to that America was more peacefully involved in world issues such as not being involved in the Cold War. I think Eisenhower was a great president who was able to influence America in a very positive way.

Soujourner was born as Isabella Baufree, in a Dutch county in New York. In 1828 he master promised to set her free but lied and Truth ran away. Truth later traveled and lectured about God. What surprised me about Soujourner was that she had a vision that led her to go around lecturing about God. This surprised me because one doesn’t here about people having visions that led them to become great people during this time. Truth doesn’t have the potential to be a Power of One subject because she didn’t affect politics or effect science and technology.

Bill Clinton was born as William Jefferson Blyth III in Hope, Arkansas. His name later changed to Clinton when his mother married Roger Clinton. What interested me about him was that he was impeached. I though it was interesting that he was the second president to be impeached. Bill Clinton could have be a possibility for Power of One because he has an affect on politics.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was a president of the United States. What interests me about him was that he had polio. I thought it was interesting how he had such an impact on America. It also interest me how his illness put the spotlight on the disease and opened people’s eyes to it. I think I he has the potential to be a Power of One subject because has had an impact on science and technology and politics.

Eisenhower did not segregate the schools, he was enforcing desegregation. Which ultimately allowed us to have the rich, culturally diverse schools and institutions that we have today.

"As desegregation of schools began, he sent troops into Little Rock, Arkansas, to assure compliance with the orders of a Federal court; he also ordered the complete desegregation of the Armed Forces. "There must be no second class citizens in this country," he wrote." -- Dwight D. Eisenhower. n.d. The White House. 07 Nov. 2009 <http://www.whitehouse.gov>.

Some of what you wrote in your bio could have been in the paragraph describing what was happening in the world which would have freed you some space to tell how he died.

You state that, "During the 1960s the first American goes into space, President Kennedy is assassinated, and Martin Luther King Jr. is killed. Many important things happened during Eisenhower’s lifetime." - - Eisenhower died in January 1961...before the events you list as "during Eisenhower's lifetime."

You have several spelling/grammar errors
