Biography
Dwight David Eisenhower was born on October 14th, 1890 and died on March 28th 1969. He graduated high school in 1909 and
went on to collage at West Point. He played for the schools footbal team untill a knee injury prevented him from participating
any further. He graduated in the upper half of his class in 1915. He started a long and full career in the Army afterword. When
America entered World War II in 1941 Eisenhower would be appointed Commander-in-Chief, Allied Forces, North Africa and would
lead operation to success. He would then lead Allied Forces to victory in Italy and France and was appointed General of the Army
by time the war had ended. When he returned he was a national hero and his fame swept the country. In 1948 he was inaugurated
as president of Columbia University and sayed there untill 1950. In 1950 he was elected the Supreme Allied Commander of the
National Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO). In 1952, November 4th, Eisenhower was elected as the 34th president of the United
States. As president he tried to remain nuetral and beleived strongly in keeping peace. He tried to contain communism and spread
Democracy. He also passed some civil rights acts and ordered troop movement for the desegregation in Little Rock. He worked hard
to give Americans "An expanding economy demonstrated by... little inflation and economic low unemployment." Eisenhower also
increased the minimum wage, expanded social security, and founded the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare(HEW).
He also created the Interstate Highway System and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA). This lead the way for
the exploration of Space. He retired January 20th, 1961.
Why I Chose Eisenhower
I chose Eisenhower for several reasons. One was for his long list of accomplishments. He was not only the commanding general who
helped end World War II, but also a president of the United States. That is only a general view of his success. The second reason i
chose him was because he seemed interesting. He was a involved in the military and politics but one of his favorite hobbies was paintings.
He was also avery athletic youth who participated in collage sports. The third reason I chose him was because of his Global Impact. He
shaped the Europe and Middle East we live in ans hear about today. He greatly affected the rebuilding of Europe and stopped Germany
from Starting World War II.
Time Period
Eisenhower was born in the late 1800's but worked from the early to mid 1900's. Early in his military carrer Europe began World War I.
This was a time when many world powers exsisted and many alliances had been formed. It was also an era that ushered in many new
inventions, including the automobile, the machine gun and airplanes. It is also critical in the way it shapes the outcome of the entire
world.Later World War II began. At this time japan had also began it's overseas expansion by invading China. The end of world war II
also started the Baby Boom whiched greatly effected the U.S.' population and econamy. This was a hit that sent Europe into low point.
Torn by war it had to be rebuilt. This was helped by the creation of the League of Nations, which was the base for the U.N.It was also
the start of the Atomic Age. The nuclear bombs had been dropped in Japan and the whole world was uneasy as for what was to come.
He also lived during the rise of Communism. The cold war had started and the Soviet Union was rying to Spread Communism all over the
world. This would later cause many conflicts in eastern Asian countries like Korea and Vietnam. This also caused the communist scare in
America. Eisenhower lived through a greatly changing and rapidly modernizing time period, but he managed to keep up.
Influence
Eisenhower was very influentual, not only in the United States but in the rest of the world as well. These influences can be seen easily
in government and culture, but may be harder to see in technology and economics. In government Eisenhower was the 34th president of
the united states. This gave him direct ties to the U.S government. While he was in charge Eisenhower tried to keep peace. He ended the
war in Korea and tried to create friendly relations with Russians. This was also shown when Eisenhower refused to interveen in Vietnam
after the French were attacked. He was also a large influce in the League of Nations which would later become the U.N. Culturally Eisenhower
made many contributions. Some of the bigger ones were the signing of civil right acts in 1957 and 1960. He also sent troops to oversea the
desegregation in high schools including Little Rock. Another big impact he had on culture was the Interstate Highway Syatem. This allowed
people who worked in the city a much easier way to travel from their workplace to nearby areas. THis was the spark for today's suburbia.
Many people could now live farther away and keep a relatively short commute time. Eisenhower impacted technology with the foundation of
NASA. THis would lead to the eventually moon landing and all the technology that would be created to make it happen. None of the space
age material and other items made for space that we use today would have been possible.Economically Eisenhower helped keep the U.S.
stable. While he president he kept unemployment rates and inflation down. This allowed small buissnesses to grow and the econamy to grow
around it as well. He also increased minimum wage and and expanded on social security. He also created the department of Health, Education,
and Welfare.

Research Journal
January 2nd 2009
Now that I have begun researching Dwight D. Eisenhower I have found that the biggest problem in
finishing this project will be establishing what sites I can use and which ones I can't. Because he was
the 44th president and an American General during WWII, there is plenty, if not too much, information
given on him. This is especially difficult because many of these people share differant opinions of him.
Some revere him, while others believe he was a plague to the American Government. This sharp contrast
in opinions in the many websites and articles I visit and read, will make it difficult to decide if the information
could be helpful to me or if it cannot help me. The process of sorting out this information and deciding
which sources are which will be a difficult time-consuming process that I will have to endure to be able
to do my best on this project and to find which sources can best help.

On a wonderful October day in 1915, at Ft. Sam Houston Texas, Eisenhower was on duty. He was assigned to walk
the post and inspect the guard. During this assingment however, Eisenhower's new friend Gee Gerow spotted him.
He invited Eisenhower to a party. Eisenhower agreed. He followed his friend to a casual lawn party taking place
outside. Little did he know that the Douds of Denver were among the guests. Even though Eisenhower had claimed
to have sworn-off women this would change the first time he laid eyes on 18 year old Mamie Geneva Doud. He
walked over to her and engaged in small talk. He soon knew he would like to date this girl and did so. Nine monthes later
Eisenhower and Mamie were married at the doud residence. They would stay married for the rest of each others lives.

Eisenhower showed many attributes that would help lead to his sucess. Some of these qualities were patriotism,
determination, and strong leadership abilities. These things helped Eisenhower stick out from other army officers during
his service and from his political competitors during his elections. They also helped him with his struggle against the
powerful German opponents that he faced in World War II. He did not however have everything go his way. In collage
a knee injury ended his football career. This caused him to lose his desire to play football and to focus on his military
career. When he missed action in World War I he was very upset. This was one of the driving forces that made him accel
as an officer and to later be in a position that greatly affected the outcome of the second World War. His time in the
service would also help him learn that people are people no matter what ethnicity. As president Eisenhower ended
segregation in the military and in some schools. He would be a factor to help give all men, black or white, equal rights
in the America we know today.

35/40 on the quote--hey! it disappeared off your save Wiki page! I only found it by looking at your history! It's a good quote. I wonder what Ike would say about today's "Homeland Security?"
35/40 on the story--I like the story, but you have some writing errors in it. Very nice.
